Presenting films from the 1950s to the 1970s, this programme looks at explorations of the documentary form at the Films Division of India, which was established in 1948 with the idealistic objective of capturing a visual record of the heady energies in a newly independent nation. Most of these films formally experiment with relations between sound, word, and image while actively interrogating political promises and realities.
Following Saturday’s screening, there will be a conversation with Deepti DCunha and Iyesha Geeth Abbas about the influence of the Films Division of India on historic and contemporary Indian cinema.

«Visionary post-war modernist Tyeb Mehta channels the nightmares of the nation in «Koodal», at once the artist’s self-described «autobiography» and a profound meditation on collage, crowd control, cinematic subjectivity and the violence buried within every glorious act of foundation.» – Sarkari Shorts

Explorer
