Most of Egypt’s population lives in cities. In the country’s pulsating urban centres, space is tight, and community is central – sometimes overwhelmingly so. In this programme, Egyptian filmmakers offer honest portrayals of their cities and their compatriots. The five films don’t show idealized images touting a way of life that appears exotic to eyes from the global North. Instead, they present affectionate yet intense and candid looks at the challenges of living in close quarters.
Cairo As Seen by Chahine
Youssef Chahine / France/Egypt 1991 / 24' / colour / Arabic / Fic/Doc
This concise masterpiece by famed Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine began as a commission for French television. Using his unique sense of artistic digression, Chahine transforms this portrait of a city into the self-portrait of a filmmaker. The film was banned in Egypt for its realistic portrayal of Cairo.
Cairography
Kinda Hassan/Dalia Naous / Egypt 2013 / 18'36" / DCP / colour / Arabic / Exp
Through «Cairography» we attempt to test the limits of the body's ability to confront social restrictions and to question the visible and invisible boundaries between public and private space in the city of Cairo: What is it like to walk the streets of Cairo? What is allowed and what is forbidden?
The Promised
Ahmed Elghoneimy / Egypt 2020 / 18'25" / DCP / colour / Arabic / Doc/Fic
In and around the historical ruins of Fustat in Old Cairo, tensions simmer between the site’s government-appointed guards and residents of a nearby informal settlement, al-Izba. The guards chase away looters and confiscate their equipment, while locals infuriate them by taking shortcuts through the site, occasionally stopping for a smoke. For the guards it would be easiest to keep the site closed until further notice.
As I Open My Eyes
Ghazzal Abdullah / Egypt 2023 / 8'24" / colour/black & white / Arabic/English / Doc/Exp
Cairo's urban metamorphosis inspires a filmmaker to navigate the city, searching for the one she once knew.
80 Million
Mohamed Zayan/Eslam Zaien El Abedeen / Egypt 2009 / 5' / colour / no dialogue / Exp
Something is brewing: With the power of a life on the brink, Zayan and Zaien engage in a rhapsodic clash. A charged, electrifying performance that deals with questions of pathos and agency. The video is a mixture of homage and lament, dedicated to the 80 million inhabitants of Egypt.
