Few relationships are as ambivalent and formative, as complicated and conflict-laden, and simultaneously as close, intense, and loving as the bond between mother and daughter. It is not surprising, then, that numerous films focus on this relationship. Mother/Daughter is a selection of very different works, genres, and approaches as well as a kaleidoscope of female characters in Israeli cinema.
After the Saturday screening, various guests from Israel will discuss contemporary Israeli short filmmaking.
Bracha
Mickey Triest/Aaron Geva / Israel 2020 / 12'45" / DCP / colour / Hebrew / Fic
During the Covid-19 curfew, Bracha is wandering in the middle of the night, holding a mattress over her head. Her anxious mother, Nitzi, has a hard time welcoming her into her home. They get into an argument that brings up old baggage and wakes up the neighbours.
The Silhouette of Braids
Rotem Dimand / Israel 2018 / 15'42" / DCP / colour / Hebrew / Doc
For 50 years, a family archive sat in the dark, until Rotem persuaded her mother, Varda, to watch her childhood anew. The 8 mm films shed light on past memories mixed with the present.
Shark Tooth
Oren Gerner / Israel 2016 / 28'15" / DCP / colour / Hebrew / Fic
Ora (57) arrives at a spiritual awareness workshop in the desert and needs to adapt to the unique dynamics of the place in order to gain some time with her daughter Tali (34). As the workshop progresses, dark elements from their past arise and force them to deal with their implications for the first time.
Everlasting Mom
Elinor Nechemya / Israel 2017 / 14' / DCP / colour / Hebrew / Fic/Exp
A daughter's fantasy of her mother, elusively portrayed at her own magical house and garden. An intergenerational sonnet.
Shmama
Miki Polonski / Israel 2017 / 25'44" / DCP / colour / Hebrew / Fic
