The essay «Who Cares about Cinema?» by film critic and curator Dennis Vetter provides the motto for this year’s Industry Lab. It addresses the question of how audiences and industry members perceive films and filmmaking – and which elements elude perception. The focus is on the invisible work of curators, critics, and filmmakers within their respective ecosystems, and on the need for «care» in dealing with artists and their work.
Drawing on the essay, an introductory talk by curator and film scholar Greg de Cuir Jr is meant to spark inspiration. The following roundtable discussion with international curators will delve deeper into the issues raised.
In the panel «New Formats», programmers, producers, and other creatives present recent trends and innovations in the areas of series, web productions, and social media, addressing the unique characteristics of these works and their target audiences.
The discussion series «The Future of Shorts» has been a regular part of the Industry Lab for several years. It is dedicated to the significance, distribution, and reception of shorts in national and international festival contexts. This year’s panel, titled «Curating as a Political Act», addresses a theme that is especially relevant in light of recent political events.
