The short film series Women’s Tales, initiated by Miu Miu, invites internationally renowned female directors to portray femininity from their personal perspectives. The filmmakers are given almost complete artistic freedom. The only requirement is that clothes from the Miu Miu collections appear as part of the cinematic world – whether as costumes, expressions of identity, or narrative elements. Five selected films from the series tell stories about desires and bodies, family and heritage, work and power, self-images and the expectations placed on women.

Carmen
Chloë Sevigny / USA 2017 / 8'13" / colour / English / Doc
What do you need to be to be really funny? Stand-up comedienne Carmen Lynch knows what it takes. As she wanders from make-up mirror to performance stage, via Portland’s woozy streets and an all-night grocery store, we’re given an intimate look at a talented individual. The city’s saturated lights and dying showbiz neon become Carmen’s passing backdrop. She confronts herself – her looks, her dreams, the weird rituals of mating in the modern world – by confronting her audiences. Sometimes they laugh with her. Sometimes they don’t laugh at all.

In My Room
Mati Diop / France/Italy 2020 / 19'59" / colour / French / Fic
Made during confinement, «In My Room» plunges us into the poignant story of a woman at the twilight of her life through recordings of the director’s deceased grandmother. Living rooms become stages where life is performed. Windows become portals to the lives of others.

Somebody

Have you ever found it impossible to say something, face to face, to someone you know, someone you love? The words just won’t come out? A new messaging service called Somebody could help.

Stane
Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic / Croatia/Italy 2023 / 20'5" / colour / Croatian/English / Fic

Carta a mi madre para mi hijo
Carla Simón / Spain/Italy 2022 / 20'21" / colour / Catalan/Spanish / Fic
Carla is pregnant and naked, imitating the poses her mother took when she was pregnant with her. Sunlight filters through the windows. We see Super 8 images of mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers, smiling, sewing, reciting poems. Then, a young girl travels from the 1960s to the 80s and on to the present, crossing the thresholds of femininity and history, until she meets with Carla by the blue sea of Catalonia and with Manel, Carla’s newborn son.
