The Veiled City
Natalie Cubides-Brady / United Kingdom 2023 / 12'54" / DCP / black & white / English / Exp/Doc
«The Veiled City» is a speculative city symphony inspired by London’s Great Smog of 1952. Created from archival footage, the story unfolds through fictional letters from a post-apocalyptic future. The film invites us to understand the smog in the context of the present-day climate emergency.
La Perra
Carla Melo Gampert / Colombia/France 2023 / 14' / DCP / colour / no dialogue / Ani
Becoming a woman: in a watercolour animation, the film beautifully captures the coming-of-age of a young girl, addressing her sexual awakening as well as her attachment to her childhood home, signified by the longing for her dog. New desires and bodily perceptions unfold. Acceptance is learned the hard way through relationships and harassment.
Oyu
Atsushi Hirai / France/Japan 2023 / 21' / DCP / colour / Japanese / Fic
It is the last day of the year, and night is falling on the small town of Toyama, Japan. A man who has come to the public baths to retrieve a forgotten object finds an old but valid ticket and succumbs to the temptation. Among clouds of vapor and the gestures and conversations around him, a simple bath slowly becomes an invitation to existential reflection.
Primetime Mother
Sonny Calvento / Philippines/Singapore 2023 / 14'53" / DCP / colour / Filipino / Fic
«Primetime Mother» addresses the abusive nature of gameshows and reality TV in a highly satirical way. Just think of competitive dance showdowns and having to tear up during the participants' melodramatic sob stories. As she endures the degrading audition process, the strength of a mother is tested to the core.
I Promise You Paradise
Morad Mostafa / France/Egypt 2023 / 25' / DCP / colour / Arabic / Fic
Following a violent incident, Eissa, a young African migrant in Egypt, is on a quest against time to save his loved ones. Saving his partner and newborn means smuggling them out of the country. The story’s incredible dreariness is surpassed only by the poignant and unforgettable cinematography.
