The historical events that led to the founding of the state of Israel were a blessing for some, a disaster for others. They continue to shape the debate on Israeli identity to this day. The term «identity» – which evokes a wide range of ideas – inspires reflection on cultural and social issues. The five shorts in this programme approach these issues from a variety of perspectives.
Palestine

This short film explores the Holy Land from the point of view of Christian pilgrims and boasts a unique and rare record of multiple locations across 1920 Palestine. The film contains footage of Nazareth, Jericho, and Tiberias, as well as numerous sites in Jerusalem, including the Western Wall, Dome of the Rock, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Mount of Olives. Various communities feature in the film, including Bedouins, Jews, and Arabs.

A re-enactment of the night when Adolf Eichmann was executed by Israeli police officers and his ashes were scattered in the sea. The film is based on an interview with Michael Goldman, a Holocaust survivor and police officer who carried out the execution.
One of Us Now

Maya is a young, queer, secular Israeli woman who spends a season at Mount Meron, a holy site of Jewish mysticism, in order to understand her father’s religious awakening. As both director and subject, she explores how her queerness and her gender might be barriers to belonging or offer untrodden paths to euphoria. The journey leads her to surprising discoveries about women in religious communities and about herself.
My Little Country
